Business description
Kosova Petrol was founded in the very first days after the 1999 war in Kosovo. Mr. Selmani, who was already a well established business man in Croatia, out of good will decided to come to Kosovo to be part of recovery and rehabilitation of the shattered economy of Kosovo. The then main authority, United Nations Mission in Kosovo (known as UNMIK) issued two crucial documents:
- ‘Law 1999/09 on the Importation, Transport, Disxtribution and Sale of Petroleum Products for and in Kosovo’ where it outlined plans to allow a local company to manage, use and improve the hitherto state owned assets of Jugopetrol and Beopetrol.
- Permission to Operate Previously State-Owned Fuel outlets and Establishments (known as Beopetrol & Jugopetrol), dated 25 January 2000.
Said outlets and establishments were heavily damaged during the war in 1999, so Bedri Selmani, now operating under the licence mentioned above underwent a massive scale investment to render them operational.
Today, Kosova Petrol continues to operate such assets, and has considerably risen their value and turned them into modern establishments. The annual sales of petroleum products in 2007 reached the 30mil litres figure, adding to this 5,000k litres of lubrificants and other associated petroleum products.
KP now runs its operation under licence issued by the Ministry of Trade and Industry in mid 2004. Taking into consideration the vast investment capital that went into the company, which is also recognized by permission issued by UNMIK in 2000 (as mentioned above) Kosova Petrol stands the absolute best chance to privatize such assets in a foreseeable future where these assets are expected to be tendered for privatization.
Company Management
When KP took over establishment formerly owned by the state, under licence mention above, it also inherited a wealth of institutional knowledge from such organisations. There are staff who are well qualified and above all with longest experience in Kosovo in the field of petroleum industry hired by KP.
